A COMPOUND IN BROCCOLI AND KALE HELPS SUPPRESS TUMOR GROWTH


The body has its own mechanisms for fighting cancer, but sometimes they are too weak to suppress tumor growth. Now, scientists have found that broccoli, kale, and other cruciferous vegetables contain a compound that could reinvigorate one of these innate mechanisms.

Research shows that some cruciferous vegetables may contain tumor suppressors. However, eating them is not enough to prevent cancer. Researchers from Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA, saw that the compound indole-3-carbinol (I3C) impeded tumor growth in a mouse model of prostate cancer.
